Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of counselling approach do you use?
I am trained as an integrative therapist and my approach is a blend of person-centred, relational and psychodynamic models. A key aspect of the work is attachment-based - exploring unmet needs that are impacting the relationships you have with yourself and other people, and helping you find new ways of relating that feel healthier and more fulfilling. I sometimes weave in ‘parts work’ to explore and resolve inner conflicts and unmet needs.
I also use a trauma-informed approach. While I am not trained in clinical treatment methods, I understand the importance of working safely and avoiding re-traumatisation. Research suggests that simply talking about traumatic events might not be helpful by itself, and that it’s important to process trauma by finding ways of reminding the brain and body that you are in a safe supportive space, pacing the work carefully while you revisit difficult experiences. You don’t need to relive the details, but developing more awareness of your thoughts, emotions and body can help build inner resilience and help you move towards positive change.
What kind of clients/issues do you work with?
I work with a broad range of issues: anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, boundaries, sexuality and gender identity, neurodiversity (ADHD, autism and AuDHD).
I am passionate about and have experience of working affirmatively with neurodivergent clients and the LGBTQ+ community, as my own personal lived experiences give me insight into how different aspects of identity can impact mental health, daily life and relationships. I offer a non-judgmental approach to help explore what your identity means to you and how you might discover and express more of your authentic self, and developing coping skills if you find this useful. Your identity might not be the focus of our work together, but it can be helpful to know that your therapist recognises and honours these parts of you.
How much do you charge for a session?
My fee is £50 for a 50-minute session (known as the therapeutic hour).
How many sessions will I need?
This varies widely depending on the person and what they are struggling with. Some people notice that they start feeling better after 6 to 8 sessions, while other people find that they need longer-term therapy to explore more complex issues. It can take time to create real, lasting change. In my experience, many clients benefit from 8-12 sessions or more. If you have a budget for a limited number of sessions, it can be worth focusing on a few core issues that you would like to resolve in short-term therapy.
Do you offer in-person sessions?
Currently I am only able to offer online sessions, but I also plan to offer in-person/face-face sessions in the near future. If you would prefer to work in-person in Newcastle-under-Lyme or Stoke-on-Trent, please do get in touch and we can discuss availability.
